Refit II

Got the compression post in place and started dry fitting the walls. Got some cleaning done after all the year of collecting dirt. I use my agent orange as I call it. Awesome Orange is the real name. It works great on almost everything. Even clean a French press like new.

Here is some of my latest photos.

                                          Dry fitting the walls.

Working on getting the sole clean.

                                         Years of  dirt coming up.

Gotta her done. Looks a lot better.

This is the main bulkhead that divides the salon and the head. This bulkhead was so wide I had to cut is in half to get it off the boat. The little piece was dado in. I used my biscuit joiner so that the half will have more strength after they are installed and glued on the boat.  I will get a coat of varnish on one side this afternoon. Then finish up on Monday. Tomorrow is my sister memorial.

More refit

Finally got around to working on the boat again over the last few days. Got
all the 3/4 inch oak cabinet grade plywood 3 sheets and a 4x4 Douglas fir cut to
69 1/2".

Bought a 2 ton floor jack and a 2 ton bottle jack along with 2x4s to jack up
the mast.

Got the ceiling braced and 3 for the 44 bulkheads removed. Got them cut out
and ready to sand and stain with red mahogany. 3 of the 4 bulkheads were water
rotten up to about 18" from the bottom. Got the 4x4 stained and epoxied. Well
the epoxy is not setting up very fast. Been 2 days and still tacky. My mistake
doing something in the mixing. I do have pumps to measure.

Today I loosened the upper and lower shrouds. 1 upper port and starboard and 2
lower on port and starboard. Loosened the halyard on the roller furling to
release any pressure and loosened the back stay.

Slowly jacking one then the other. Checked the shrouds all tight so I loosened
them some more. The original post and salon bulkhead have no pressure on them. I
set the new post up against the old one after I cut the new post at 69". 68 half
didn't remove the low spot on the deck. 69 half seem to put to much pressure on
the deck. I'm happy now.

I am going on a delivery Saturday helping a friend move his Tartan 41 to a
different marina up by Galveston. Should be back working on the compression post
Tuesday.

Plan is to epoxy all the edges on the plywood where there might be water
intrusion. I can guarantee we wont be showering in there. Deck, cockpit and
marinas for us. I'll spray 3 or 4 coats of varnish so this will be a slow
process with both sides getting varnish.

I'll post photos next week. Forgot the camera. Oldtimers does set in at time.

Compression post

Started on the removal of the rotted compression post this weekend. I had gotten all the material needed to get the job done.
3 sheets of 3/4 oak plywood
1 4x4 Douglas fir post for the compression post.

Got 3 bulkheads removed and a temp brace in place. My 2 floor jack are junk and are now in the dump. I hate bottle jacks but that is what I'll be using.

Plan is to epoxy the post and the bottoms of the plywood. I'll spray stain the plywood and also spray the varnish.

In order to jack up the cabin top to remove the old post I'll have to loosen up the shrouds to release the pressure. Jacking will be slow and easy.

Had a diver dive and clean the bottom. The zink was link new but I do need a bottom job. A few blisters need to be fix. I'm thinking that since she will be on the hard just do the top side while I'm at it. Plan is around the 5th of Sept to do the haul out.

More later.

Why

Why did I buy Miss Sadie?  Well I thought we would do some cruising this summer. Well that is on hold big time. I don't even care if I don't even care if I go to the boat.

Lisa had her surgery on the 13th. She has been in a lot of pain since them.

Back working on the boat.

Lisa's surgery went well. She stayed in the hospital for 5 days. Home now recovering. She finally told me to go to the boat so I jumped at the chance.

Got the shore power working.

Work going slow.

Seems like this boat is a can of worms. Start to fix something and it ends up being 5 more new projects. Getting me down.

I started installing the new  port lights. What a job. They were installed with 3M 5200 glue and I mean Glue. Got one installed after working 2 days on it.

Now for the really bad news. I was told during our first look and checking the boat over before purchase the just because she is dirty there is nothing that would be a deal killer. That included the whole deck and standing rigging.

Well over this last weekend I found where the compression post has rotted at the bottom. This is why the upper and lower shrouds were loose. The shrouds are the part that hold the mast up. The compression post being rotten would have been a deal killer. We did not want a project. Miss Sadie being so neglected is a project.

Photos of the bottom of the compression post.

Additional photos of the mast where you can see is sinks into the deck.
